THE OPPORTUNITY:
Reporting into the Lead Process Control Systems, the Process Control Systems Engineer will be responsible for the maintenance, and optimization of process control systems and automation infrastructure supporting processing operations. This role requires strong technical expertise in PLC programming, SCADA systems, MES applications, and industrial networking to ensure reliable operation of critical production systems. The engineer will work closely with operational teams, vendors, and the broader technology team to deliver effective solutions that minimize downtime and maximize operational efficiency.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Technical Engineering
- Maintain, configure, program, and commission PLC systems, SCADA applications, and process control networks for processing plant operations
- Develop, implement, maintain control system logic, HMI screens, and alarm management strategies
- Support MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) applications for production tracking and optimization
- Complete Audits and verifications to ensure control systems meets ongoing business requirements
- Perform detailed troubleshooting and root cause analysis of control system faults and performance issues
- Maintain system documentation including P&IDs, control narratives, network diagrams, as-built drawings and other documentation
- Perform Process Control Management Processes on all Process related systems
- Support continuous improvement initiatives through automation enhancements and process optimization
- Ensure control system designs comply with relevant standards, safety requirements, and best practices
- Engage with key stakeholders to understand and review technical requirements of system improvements and changes
Process Control System Support
- Provide technical support for operational technology infrastructure including:
- PLC, Drives, and other APC and DCS systems
- Network & Communication assets within process control realm
- Instrumentation, IEDs.
- MES systems and applications
- SCADA and other plant automation and control systems
- Respond to service interruption requests as defined by priority and SLA requirements
- Execute planned maintenance activities on control system hardware and software
- Perform software updates, patches, and version upgrades in accordance with change management procedures
- Collaborate with Perth-based infrastructure teams to resolve network, server, and storage-related incidents
- Participate in on-call rotation to provide after-hours support for critical production systems
- Maintain spare parts inventory and coordinate equipment procurement with vendors
Project
- Participate in capital projects involving process control system installations and upgrades
- Internal with EPC contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders to ensure successful project execution
- Develop project specifications, scope documents, and technical requirements
- Review vendor designs and ensure alignment with site standards and operational requirements
- Conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
- Ensure smooth transition from project delivery to operational support
Asset Management & Documentation
- Maintain accurate records of all control system assets in the company asset register
- Ensure system documentation is current and stored in appropriate knowledge repositories
- Develop and update maintenance procedures, work instructions, and troubleshooting guides
- Maintain version control for PLC programs, SCADA applications, and configuration files
- Document system changes through proper change management processes
- Create training materials to support operations and maintenance personnel
Collaboration & Communication
- Work collaboratively with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to understand process requirements
- Liaise with vendors and service providers to resolve technical issues and optimize support arrangements
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers and technicians
- Participate in incident investigations and contribute technical expertise to resolution efforts
- Communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Support the Superintendent in planning, scheduling, and prioritizing work activities
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all work complies with PLS safety policies, procedures, and Life Saving Rules
- Conduct risk assessments for control system modifications and installations
- Implement appropriate security controls and access management for control systems
- Follow PLS Technology methodologies including request, change, and problem management
- Participate in safety initiatives and contribute to a proactive safety culture
- Report and investigate near misses, incidents, and hazards
ABOUT YOU:
- Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation, Mechatronics, or related discipline
- Possession of a current Class C Driver's License
- Practical experience in the design, implementation, and support of process control systems
- Minimum 3 years' experience in PLC programming and SCADA development
- Experience supporting control systems in a 24/7 production environment
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex control system issues
- Mining/processing industry experience preferred
PLC & Automation Platforms:
- Allen Bradley PLC programming (ControlLogix, CompactLogix)
- Rockwell systems and applications (FactoryTalk View, Historian, Asset Centre)
- AVEVA systems (Plant SCADA/Citect)
- Experience with drives, VFDs, and motor control systems
SCADA & HMI Development:
- Design and development of operator interfaces
- Alarm management and rationalization
- Trending and historical data configuration
Industrial Networking
- Good understanding of networking topology and protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, MQTT, OPC)
- Experience with industrial switches, firewalls, and network architecture
- Knowledge of ring, star, and redundant network topologies
MES & Data Systems:
- Experience with Manufacturing Execution Systems
- Understanding of data integration between process control and business systems
- Familiarity with SQL databases and data historians
Technical Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and loop diagrams
- Proficiency with instrumentation and control valve troubleshooting
- Understanding of process control theory and PID loop tuning
- Excellent attention to detail and documentation skills
Soft Skills:
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
- Self-motivated with a "can do" attitude
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure
