THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Mine Technology Engineer acts as a subject matter expert in the implementation, configuration, and maintenance of mining technology systems.
This role provides technical leadership and frontline support across wireless communications, fleet management systems, IP network infrastructure, and mining-specific technologies such as wall monitoring and remote firing systems.
In addition to managing the performance and integration of these technologies, the engineer supports Mine Technology Technicians to ensure consistent, high-quality service delivery across site operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Subject Matter Expert for Mine Technology Systems
- Act as the site-level SME across RF communications, fleet systems, networks, and mining-specific technologies.
- Provide advanced troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and technical resolution for complex system issues.
- Evaluate, test, and recommend new technology solutions that align with operational goals.
RF Planning & Wireless Communications
- Design and manage RF systems including propagation modeling, antenna placement, and interference mitigation.
- Maintain LTE, Wi-Fi, and mesh networks that support mobile equipment and personnel connectivity.
- Ensure robust, continuous wireless coverage across operational areas.
Fleet Management System Configuration
- Configure, maintain, and optimise fleet management platforms (e.g., Minestar, Hexagon, Wenco).
- Integrate onboard systems with site networks and back-end services.
- Work with controllers and operations to align configurations with current mine plans and production targets.
Network Configuration & Design
- Design and maintain IP-based network infrastructure to support mine technologies.
- Configure switches and wireless access points to enable reliable and secure data flow across the site.
- Monitor network health, maintain documentation, and coordinate changes with IT and operational teams.
Two-Way Radio Systems Configuration & Design
- Lead the planning, design, and configuration of digital and analog two-way communication systems.
- Manage infrastructure such as repeaters and IP-linked radio systems to ensure clear communication across site teams.
- Configure talkgroups, channel plans, and user devices to meet operational needs.
Mining Technology Integration
- Support the deployment and integration of systems such as wall monitoring, remote firing, and high-precision GPS.
- Ensure these technologies are fully integrated with site infrastructure and operate reliably in a production environment.
- Document safe work instructions and provide support during commissioning and rollout phases.
ABOUT ME:
- Bachelor's Degree in Telecommunications, Electrical, or Systems Engineering, or related field.
- Possession of a current manual Class C Driver’s License.
- Practical experience in the design, implementation, and operation of technology services to support changing business requirements.
- Mining industry experience with a number of these years being spent in a FIFO role.
- 5 years’ experience supporting Operation technology applications and communications assets in a 24/7 production critical environment.
- Mining application support experience (Fleet Management, process control, HPGPS).
- In Pit Wireless Mesh Network management and support.
- Technically minded and able to effectively communicate with IT and OT Engineers on a deep technical level.
- Strong technical knowledge of RF planning, fleet management systems, and network design.
- Ability to perform detailed technical troubleshooting of operational system issues and summarise for action by vendor support teams.
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
- Strong stakeholder and vendor management skills.
- High level of problem-solving skills.
- Self-motivated and driven with a “can do” attitude.
